Rescuing wildlife with creativity
We understand that many of the students at L.T.C respond to life with empathy, making a contribution to the broader community outside of the classroom, this is one such story. A fantastic response to a crisis from Caitlin Allen in Year 11.
It started with a whole load of anxiety and distress at watching places we love and feel strong connection to, go up in flames, particularly Namadgi and the South Coast. Art has always been Cait’s stress reliever and she drew a digital art piece of a koala to help process events. She wondered if anyone would buy a print of it with all proceeds going to wildlife rescue organisations so offered it up on a social media post. With a positive reaction to this post, she created further digital artworks of a wombat and kangaroo and a canvas painting of lorikeets to also sell.
In just over a week Cait had orders for over 300 cards and posters, 8 orders for canvas commissions and spent a large component of the remaining holidays in what was my dining room but has since become an art studio. Her efforts have so far raised $1750 dollars, with artworks sent to places across Australia and overseas. She has donated to both Wildlife Rescue South Coast and Sleepy Burrows Wombat Sanctuary near Gundaroo.
Recycling and the Tuggeranong Youth Engagement Forum
Students are becoming more and more involved at Lake Tuggeranong College with issues around the local environment. It’s not surprising after the recent summer, the bush fires and the air quality within the Valley and the broader Canberra community.
The Tuggeranong Community Council is providing an opportunity for young people to contribute to a Youth Engagement Forum. With the details below the forum works well and comes at the same time that the student voice is also developing through the Lake Tuggeranong College recycling group within the College.
The details for the first meeting of Recycling Group are set out below and all interested Year 11 and 12 Students are invited to attend. If you would like to know more please contact Scott.Carter@ed.act.edu.au

The Graduation ceremony takes place Thursday 17th December from 9am at the Southern Cross Stadium, Greenway.
Contributions
The Lake Tuggeranong College blog is a place for stories so if you would like to contribute a story about one of our Year 11, Year 12 or alumni contributing to the broader community we would love to hear from you. If you can include a photograph in .jpeg format with the story that would be terrific.
Please send your contribution to richard.baldwin@ed.act.edu.au
Many thanks to Mich Allen for her contribution this week.
