Cover Design Competition for the Strategic Bushfire Management Plan

Living in Canberra allows us to enjoy the beautiful natural surroundings of the ‘bush capital.’ This also means we need to be ready for bushfires. The ACT Rural Fire Service (ACTRFS) reviews the ‘Strategic Bushfire Management Plan’ (SBMP) every 5 years to ensure the Canberra community is well-protected and prepared for bushfires. The 5th version of the SBMP is being developed and will be launched in early 2025, and it needs a fresh and creative cover.

The ACTRFS is inviting creative and artistic school students in the ACT to design a new cover for the SBMP. The design theme is “Shared Responsibility – we all have a role in preparing for bushfires.” Detailed guidelines for the cover design competition are provided in the attachment. Multiple winners may be selected, and their designs will be featured on and inside the new plan. Group entries are also welcome.

The competition closes on Sunday 15 December 2024 and submissions can be sent to RFS@act.gov.au.

Restart a Heart Day 2024

Following on from Restart a Heart Day, the ACT Ambulance Service want to remind the community what to do in the event of a cardiac arrest.

A cardiac arrest can happen to anyone, at any time, at any age and with 80% of cardiac arrests happening out-of-hospital, it is important to be prepared and confident to act, until a paramedic arrives.

Everyone is encouraged to start the discussion early, in school or at home. Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training in schools is endorsed by the World Health Organisation, which recommends the best age to learn is from 12 years old. Even young children can learn how to recognise an emergency and how to call an ambulance.

Free Period Products Available at ACT Schools

All ACT public schools are stocked with free period products so students can access them no matter their circumstances. This is part of the ACT Government’s commitment to ensuring students feel comfortable and confident within our schools.

Free period products are available at our school’s front office. Students can access them at any time by talking to our helpful front office staff.

Sanitary pads are available from the front offices of primary schools, while pads and tampons are available at the front offices of high schools and colleges.

Because menstruation is a fact of life, we believe free access to period products should be too.

Public Transport Behaviour: A Message for Families

We are seeking your support to address a growing concern: the inappropriate behaviours of some students on public transport. Unfortunately, these behaviours have escalated, becoming offensive and even violent at times, impacting other passengers and bus drivers.

As members of our community, bus drivers and passengers deserve to be treated with kindness and respect. We all have a role to play in ensuring the safety and comfort of everyone using public transport.

At school, we will be reminding students of the expectations for travelling on buses and light rail and we kindly ask you to have these important conversations at home as well. Here are a few key behaviours to discuss with your young person:

· Be polite and listen to the driver or transport officer.

· Show respect to the driver and other passengers – inappropriate language or physical violence is never acceptable.

· Remember to tap on and pay for your trip*

· Look after the bus or light rail vehicle – avoid leaving rubbish or causing damage, and hand in any lost items.

· Avoid disruptive behaviour – eating, drinking, and making loud noises can disturb others.

· Be considerate – give up your seat to someone who needs it more, such as an elderly person, someone who is pregnant, or someone with a disability.

Anyone behaving inappropriately on public transport may be asked to leave, and ACT Policing may be contacted.

Together, by reinforcing these expectations at school and at home, we can ensure a safe, respectful, and pleasant journey for all.

Thank you for your cooperation and support in this matter. For more information on public transport etiquette, please visit the Transport Canberra website.

Learner Driver First Aid Program

Learner drivers who have held their learner licence for at least three months are encouraged to complete an approved learner driver first aid course. Participants can claim 5 hours credit towards their required driving hours. More information can be found on the ACT Government City Services’ Learner and provisional driver safety webpage.

The webpage also provides information about the Safer Driver Course and the Vulnerable Road User Program which provide additional optional training for learner drivers to understand and develop safe driving behaviours and to safely share the road with other users. Completion of these courses can also count towards required driving hours for eligible learner drivers.
