The Human Ecology class was very fortunate to get an authentic educational experience (costs waived) on board a Lake Burley Griffin cruise boat. Our host CEO of Riversmart, Dr. Bill Phillips, spoke to us about how humans have impacted on the lake’s ecology.
We visited six sites around the lake to learn about the negative aspects of our impact such as willow trees, carp, stormwater drains, building sites, algal blooms etc.
We also learned how wetlands are an essential part of the lake’s ecology in cleaning up the water just like our kidneys clean up our blood. The day started with some fog but this burnt off and we enjoyed a nice sunny day by the end of the tour. Many thanks to Dr. Phillips and our captain (Steve) for giving up their time and services for us to learn about our environment and how to sustain it.
